OUR PASTOR

“Just tell them that I’m a child of the King” says Pastor Tommy L. Davis, a native of Paterson, New Jersey who attended the infamous Eastside High School as depicted in the movie, Lean on Me. Pastor Davis is a disabled U.S. Navy veteran having served 11 years of honorable service. He is currently an instructor and substitute teacher.

It was during his Navy years that he met his wife of 29 years, Minister Veronica Davis. Their blissful marriage has produced three wonderful children, Tommy II and twins, Vaniya and Vashti. After accepting his call to preach in 1997 and serving faithfully under the leadership of Rev. Dr. L.W. Myers at the Flat Rock Missionary Baptist Church of Opelika, Pastor Davis was called to lead New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in the Motts Community of Smiths Station, Alabama and assumed the pulpit on February 4, 2001.

Pastor Davis is a 2010 and 2013 graduate from Auburn University obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s of Education Degree in Adult Education. He is currently an adult education doctoral student at Auburn.  However, Pastor Davis says that the only degree that truly matters is his B.A. – BORN AGAIN – degree.

OUR CHURCH

The New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church family reaches out to and serves the communities of Lee and Russell Counties in Alabama, and the City of Columbus, Georgia. Through a continued fellowship with others, the church is fulfilling the great commission of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by going into the entire world, teaching, preaching, and baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

The church was organized as the Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. T.J. Yarbrough in the late 1800s. Since records of the exact date have been lost or destroyed, the year of our Lord 1894 has been adopted. This is the year listed on the deed for land purchased by the Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Since that time, the following men of God have been called to serve the New Jerusalem church family: Rev. T.J. Yarbrough; Rev. E.E. Ellis; Rev. Lynn Boyd; Rev. A.C. Daniels; Rev. R.T. Lewis; Rev. G.H. Henry (1943-1953); Rev. O.L. Holston (1953-1973); Rev. R.M. Murphy (1973-1976); Rev. W.H. Dawson (1977-1978); Rev. Jesse Lee Hall (1979-2000); and Pastor Tommy L. Davis (2001-present).
